Let's B Safe For
Parents & Teachers
BEFORE READING DURING READING AFTER READING

Ask students to tell you what they predict (what they think) LET´S B SAFE is all about. If they sound out and say the word “safety” then ask them to predict what kind of safety? Do they think it´s about bike safety or about being safe in a car (wearing a seat belt)?

- New Generation Benchmark: LA.A.1.1.1: The student predicts what a passage is about based on its title and illustrations.

Ask students if they can figure out what the next rhyming word will be BEFORE you say it. For instance, you read “Stay away from vans, stay away from cars, run away fast, run away___ ?”

- New Generation Benchmark: LA.A.2.1.2: The student recognizes rhymes, rhythm and patterned structures in children´s texts.

Ask students to find the words that rhyme in the book and/or ask them to make up a simple rhyme of their own.

- New Generation Benchmark: LA.D.2.1: The student understands the power of language.

Ask students to retell the safety rules and any of the rhymes that they may remember. Ask the students questions from the Parent/Teacher Review Guide at the back of the book.

EASY AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO ADDRESS HEALTH & BEHAVIOR BENCHMARKS
When reading the safety rhyme that begins “Stop it Now, Let me be...” ask students to yell ‘Stop it Now! Let me be!...’ and to say it like they mean it with their hand stretched out in front of them as if to say “STOP!”
