Too many deserving students who want to go to college can’t, simply because they can’t afford it. If these young, motivated students were given access to their dreams and aspirations, if someone got to them before they gave up, found a way to keep them in school, gave them a chance, a way out, they would become productive and successful citizens. Fortunately, somebody has. Take Stock In Children is a non for profit program that helps children from low income families achieve academic and personal success through a postsecondary college scholarship and mentor program led by a local partnership of schools, businesses, agencies and individuals.
Mentors play an important role in students’ successes in school and in the community. They help students with homework and to improve their academic skills. Students who regularly meet with mentors are less likely to skip school and more likely to graduate from high school. For these and many other reasons, Florida’s Take Stock In Children (TSIC) program is changing the lives of students. Founded by Don Pemberton in 1995 in St. Petersburg, Florida, TSIC has provided students from low-income families in grades 6 through 12 with mentors, tutoring, scholarships, early intervention and long-term support services to help ensure their success in school and the community. The program is offered in every county and school district in the State of Florida.
