In addition, it is the home of a school district that serves more than 44,000 students and employs more than 5,500 employees, making the school district the largest employer in Manatee County.

Manatee District seniors in the Class of 2012 earned more than $14 million in scholarships and were accepted into more than 120 colleges and universities across America including Harvard, Brown, Duke, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of North Carolina, University of California Berkley, University of California Los Angeles, the United States Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy and nearly every public and private college and university in Florida. |

On April 12, 2012, students from the Manatee District set a Guinness World Record for the “Most Plastic Bottles Recycled” in an eight-hour period by collecting 29,560 pounds of plastic bottles. The previous record was held by a group of schools in China |

In July 2012, Manatee District students dominated the 2012 National Technology Student Association (TSA) competition in Nashville, earning more top 10 finishes than any other school district - or state. |

In June 2012, students from Manatee Technical Institute students won more medals than any other school in the nation at the 48th Annual SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City. It marked the ninth-straight year MTI won more medals than any other school. |

In May 2012, Lakewood Ranch High was named the winner of the Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award for Class 6A by the Florida High School Athletic Association for having the most successful overall athletic program in the state in its classification. |

In July 2012, Sandra Ford, the Director of the Manatee County School District´s Food and Nutrition Services, was installed as President of the national School Nutrition Association at the organization´s annual conference in Denver. The School Nutrition Association serves more than 55,000 members across the country and its vision is to ensure all children have access to healthful school meals and nutrition education. |

In December 2011, Manatee High School won its fifth state football championship under Hall of Fame head coach Joe Kinnan when the Hurricanes blanked Jacksonville First Coast 40-0 in Orlando´s Citrus Bowl for the Class 7A state championship. |

In November 2011, Manatee District employees, parents and students led the way as more than 120,000 pounds of food was collected for The Food Bank of Manatee during the annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign. The amount collected easily exceeded the goal of 100,000 pounds of food established prior to the event. Over three years, more than 251,000 pounds of food has been donated to the Food Bank of Manatee through Stuff the Bus efforts. |

Throughout the 2011-2012 school year, more than 4,300 area residents volunteered over 170,000 hours in Manatee District schools; a total that would surpass more than $3.3 million in in-kind service. |
