The outstanding efforts of students and staff in Manatee County classrooms was rewarded in a big way Friday when the Florida Education Department presented district schools with more than $2.3 million in School Recognition Funds.

Part of the state's A+ Plan for Education, School Recognition Funds are based on student performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and are awarded to public schools that achieve an A from the state or improve by at least one letter grade from the previous year. The recognition funds amount to $100 per student at each school.

During the 2005-2006 academic year, 25 schools (50% of the schools graded in Manatee County) achieved an A grade from the state. In addition, 11 district schools improved their grades by one letter, and three district schools - Lee Middle, Myakka City Elementary and Palmetto Elementary - improved their grades by two letters. In total, 29 Manatee district schools received the recognition funds which amounted to $2,327,456; a sum which ranked 20th among Florida's 67 school districts.

Lakewood Ranch High, which improved from a B to an A, garnered the largest share of the district's school recognition funds at $222,132. Lincoln Middle School, which improved from a C to a B, received the second-highest total in the district at $120,266.

How the recognition funds are spent at each school is decided in collaboration with teachers, administrators, other staff and the School Advisory Council. The funds can be used for needed equipment, staff bonuses, hiring additional personnel or for other academic needs.
