NFL GREAT AND LT. GOVERNOR COMING TO MANATEE TO HONOR DISTRICT MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
(Bradenton, FL - January 10, 2008) Pro football Hall of Famer Jim Brown will be the keynote speaker when the Manatee District honors 180 middle school students at a special Amer-I-Can Ceremony on Tuesday, January 15, 2008,
at 11 a.m. at Braden River High School. Florida Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp is expected to attend the ceremony on behalf of Governor Charlie Crist.
One of the founders and the CEO of Amer-I-Can, Mr. Brown helped bring the state-funded program to Manatee County after a bout of gang violence resulted in the tragic shooting death of 9-year old Orange-Ridge Bullock Elementary student Stacy Williams III in the spring of 2007.
Now up and running in four district middle schools - Harllee, Johnson, Lincoln and Sugg - the Amer-I-Can program strives to overcome some of societies most pressing problems by teaching teenagers positive self esteem and life management skills. Facilitators at the schools
work with students each day for a full semester, while three full-time “Peace Squad Leaders” take the program's message into the surrounding community.
Tuesday's ceremony is designed to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of the first group of local students to complete the semester course. Braden River High is located at 6545 53rd St. E. (State Road 70).
