MCNEAL 4TH GRADERS STUDYING AFRICAN AMERICANS THAT CHANGED HISTORY

Students in Martha Nieves' fourth-grade class at McNeal Elementary School are celebrating Black History Month by reading and learning about African Americans who helped change history. During the month of February, students in Ms. Nieves class will learn about notable figures such as Thurgood Marshall, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. MANATEE SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS PAYS TRIBUTE TO BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Manatee School for the Arts will present a tribute to Black History Month in the school's theater tomorrow (Friday, February 8, 2008) at 9:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. During the tribute, which was totally produced by MSA students, there will be step dancing, poetry reading, singing and a slide show celebrating the contributions of famous African Americans. BOOKS-A-MILLION FIELD TRIP AN ADVENTURE FOR TILLMAN STUDENTS

Approximately 20 Exceptional Education Students from Tillman Elementary School in Palmetto are scheduled to take a field trip to Books-A-Million Bookstore tomorrow (Friday, February 8, 2008) at 9:45 a.m. Many of these students have never visited a book store before. While at Books-A-Million, the students will be able to browse through the books on sale, and the school hopes to provide each student an opportunity to purchase a book of their own. FREEDOM STUDENTS WISHING VETERANS A HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

Freedom Elementary students are creating and collecting close to 500 Valentine's Day cards to send to hospitalized veterans in St. Petersburg. Freedom fourth-grade teacher Julie Tinyes is helping to organize the card drive while Freedom Art teacher Cheryl Meehan is helping students design and craft the cards during her art classes. 'WOOF, WOOF' AND 'MEOW': LEE MIDDLE STUDENTS HELP HUMANE SOCIETY

Student Council members and science students at Lee Magnet Middle School have organized an effort to make a difference in our community by choosing to help the Humane Society of Manatee County. The students are collecting dog and cat food, pet toys, towels, blankets, animal carriers and other necessary items to give to the animals waiting to be adopted. DAUGHTERS OF ANNIE LUCY WILLIAMS SET TO VISIT WILLIAMS ELEMENTARY

Johncyna McCrae and Deborah Thomas, the daughters of Annie Lucy Williams, will visit Williams Elementary, the school named in their mother's honor on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 to talk about her life, her career in education and her service to our community. The daughters will visit with students from each grade level in thirty minute intervals as part of the school's observance of Black History Month.
