“Good Things Happening Around the Manatee County School District” STORY IDEAS--PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES Contact: Michael Barber, Press Relations (941) 708-8770, ext. 2283 Bradenton, FL - January 24, 2008 LATIN FORUM PROVIDES GREAT WAY TO DISPLAY FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS Close to 300 students from around the Tampa Bay area will converge on Lakewood Ranch High School this Saturday, January 26, 2008, to take part in a regional Latin Forum. During the forum, students participate in competitions that include academic exams, dramatic interpretations, costume contests, games and an overall knowledge contest similar to the College Bowl. Students from approximately 12 schools are expected to compete, including students from Manatee, Sarasota and Hillsborough Counties. In addition to students from Lakewood Ranch, local competitors will include students from Saint Stephen's Episcopal School. OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD FOR SCHOOL CHOICE RUNS THROUGH FEB. 8th The school district's Open Enrollment for School Choice runs from Tuesday, January 2, 2008, to Friday, February 8, 2008. This is the only time during the year when parents can apply to have their child attend a school other than the one to which they are assigned without giving a specified reason for the move. School choice applications are available at school sites, or at www.manateeschools.net by clicking on the quicklink titled "School Choice," or at the award-winning Parent Information Center located at 234 Manatee Ave. E. THEN YOU NEED TO 'DISCOVER WAKELAND' Wakeland Elementary School of International Studies invites parents and students from across the district to learn about the school during “Discover Wakeland” this Saturday, January 26, 2008, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School Candidate, Wakeland offers students a unique academic experience along with a global awareness curriculum that includes daily instruction in Spanish and in culture. All of the students at Wakeland attend via school choice and transportation is provided. The event will include an IB overview, demonstration lessons, student-guided tours, entertainment and food. Students and staff at King Middle School have found an exciting way to get ready for the FCAT math test - they're going to hold an evening competition titled “Are You Smarter Than A 6th Grade Math Student?” The competition will pit King students against teachers and school staff members and will be held at the school on Thursday, February 7, 2008, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parents and the public are encouraged to attend. BABY SITTERS HELP NOLAN MIDDLE PARENTS GET MORE INVOLVED Starting Monday, January 28, 2008, Nolan Middle School will begin offering baby-sitting services for parents so they can attend School Advisory Council (SAC) and Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings at the school.
