BAYSHORE HIGH STUDENT´S SUNFLOWER WILL HANG IN HALLS OF WASHINGTON

Nicollette Mawad, a freshman at Bayshore High School, recently had a piece of her artwork named “Best of Show” among students in the 13th Congressional District which is represented by Congressman Vern Buchanan. As a reward for her work - a detailed stippling of a sunflower - Mawad will be flown to Washington, D.C. for a special presentation, she will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards tuition to the Savannah School of Art and Design, and her work will hang in Washington, D.C. for one year. DISTRICT STUDENT RECEIVES COLLEGE-SPONSORED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

Manatee High School senior Robert D. Bieber was recently named a 2008 College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship Winner according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Bieber´s scholarship award came from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. In all, more than 2,800 National Merit Scholarships are financed by colleges and universities. These awards provide between $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship. NEWSWEEK RANKS SOUTHEAST AMONG NATION´S BEST HIGH SCHOOLS

For the third-year in a row, Southeast High School was ranked among America´s Best High Schools according to Newsweek magazine. This year, Newsweek ranked Southeast No. 348 out of 1,300 high schools. It was the second-highest ranking for Southeast, which is located in east Bradenton. For more information, contact Southeast Assistant Principal Brenda O´Connor at 741-3366.

MANATEE HIGH FRESHMAN TAKES 3RD PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

Shelby Marie Raye, a freshman at Manatee High, took 3rd place for her entry in the Addiction Science Award competition sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Raye´s project was titled What´s In and What´s Out: High Schoolers Perceptions of Coolness. The Addiction Science category is a new addition to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world´s largest science competition for high school students. BUFFALO CREEK MIDDLE CONTINGENT SETS SIGHTS ON PARIS AND ROME

Two staff members from Buffalo Creek Middle School will take a group of 50 students and parents to explore Paris and Rome in June 2009. Joseph Baker, the Social Studies Department Chair at Buffalo Creek, and Tammy Johnson, the Senior School Secretary, will lead the expedition which is part of Education First Educational Tours.
