Title
Approval of the Report of Teachers Who are Out-Of-Field in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) (Revised)

Description

The META (Multicultural and Educational Training Advocacy) decree requires that all teachers of LEP (limited English proficient) students receive training in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) strategies.  The amount of required training is dependent on the teacher’s subject area and ranges from 18 to 300 hours.  Affected teachers are given up to six years to complete this training after receiving an LEP student, depending on the number of hours of training required.  Teachers of LEP students must be reported as out-of-field until they complete the required training.  They are not being reported as out-of-field in their subject areas. Those teachers on the attached list only are required to complete ESOL training.  They are also not required to complete six semester hours of training per year as are teachers who are out of field in their subject areas.  The maximum amount of training that they will be required to complete in a single year is 60 hours.  The Superintendent recommends that the School Board approve the report of teachers who are out-of-field in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).
