    The purpose of this course is to enable high school students who are native speakers of languages other than English to accelerate their development of English communication and literacy skills. This course will strengthen English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills so that students are able to successfully comprehend high school grade-level text, as well as communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting.  The texts and online instructional programs focus on a wide range of topics in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and academic language in order to support students in meeting the knowledge demands of increasingly complex texts. Scaffolding is provided as necessary as students engage in reading and writing, and is removed progressively as the abilities of the students improve.  

    Prerequisite – placement based on ESOL teacher recommendation.  


    Intensive Reading 1 - 4

    The purpose of this course is to provide instruction that enables students to accelerate the development of reading and writing skills and to strengthen those skills, so they can successfully read and write grade level text independently. Instruction emphasizes reading comprehension, reading fluency, and vocabulary study by using a variety of literary and informational texts encompassing a broad range of text structures, genres, and levels of complexity. Texts used for instruction focus on a wide range of topics, including content-area information, to support students in meeting the knowledge demands of increasingly complex text. Students enrolled in the course will engage in interactive text-based discussion, question generation, and research opportunities. They will write in response to reading and cite evidence when answering text-dependent questions orally and in writing. The course provides extensive opportunities for students to collaborate with their peers. Scaffolding is provided as necessary as students engage in reading and writing increasingly complex text and is removed as the reading and writing abilities of students improve over time.


    Learning Strategies

    The purpose of this course is to provide instruction that enables students with disabilities to acquire and use strategies and skills to enhance their independence as learners in educational and community settings. Skills focused on in Learning Strategies class include and are not limited to: The use of instructional and assistive technology to locate and access information, participate in computer-based instruction or testing, solve mathematical problems, create documents or images, and communicate with others. Use time management and organization skills and strategies to complete class and work assignments. Use appropriate social skills and strategies to interact with peers and adults in settings, such as cooperative learning, participating in small and large groups, accepting feedback. And resolving conflicts. Students must have an IEP to enroll in this class.
