“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically... Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
Florida State Statute 1003.42 requires districts to incorporate a Character Education curriculum across all grade levels. In order to develop a consistent and coordinated effort which addresses not only state statute, but also meets the unique needs of our district schools, The School District of Manatee County developed the framework known as Character to the Core. The foundation of this framework is contained in these key ideas:
- A common set of expectations must be in evidence throughout the district,
- Schools must have flexibility to reflect their own unique climates and needs, and yet be accountable for implementation and improvement
- All stakeholders must practice and model the traits in their daily work with each other and with the larger community
- Parents, volunteers, business partners and the community should support and be part of implementation activities
A final key idea reflects the developmental nature of how human beings grow and mature. Schools and individuals need time and opportunities for self reflection and feedback in order to truly embrace these traits and make them a natural part of how we live and learn within our communities.
