Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading and to inspire Florida's students and families to make reading part of their daily routines, according to the Florida Department of Education.
Schools across Manatee County participated in the fun by hosting spirit days. This year’s theme is: Take a Deep Dive into Literacy.
To kick off Celebrate Literacy Week, Miller Elementary hosted a breakfast for guest readers. Volunteers visited classrooms to read books, including Joanne Hibbs and her four-legged friend, Tara.
Superintendent Cynthia Saunders visited Johnson K-8 with Executive Director of Elementary Education, Dr. Annette Codelia on Tuesday. Both spent time reading to students.
On Wednesday, Braden River Middle students took a special field trip to Braden River Elementary to read to some of their kindergarten and 1st grade students!
On Thursday, School Board Member Richard Tatem visited Palmetto Elementary and read to Mrs. Nickerson's 4th grade class. Afterwards, he answered questions about his time in the military. At Stewart Elementary, Principal Mike Mullen from nearby King Middle School served as a mystery reader for fifth grade students.
In support of Dive into Literacy Week, elementary school cafeteria staffers decorated the serving areas with fun, sea-like decor and ocean-themed books. Thursday's lunch menu included: Surfboard Chicken Tenders, Blue Lagoon Jello and more.
