Epic surprise for Abel Elementary teachers and staff for earning "A" school grade

When the staff returned to Abel Elementary School last week, Principal Samantha Webb had an epic surprise for them.

They were encouraged to wear their favorite 90s attire and when it came time to get to work, Mrs. Webb and Assistant Principal Jennifer Moore, led them outside where Southeast High School’s drum line was waiting to serenade them.

A couple of the young musicians were recognized by teachers as former Abel students.

Why the celebration? Abel Elementary School earned its first “A” grade since 2011.

The Florida Department of Education recently released 20203-2024 school grades based on a formula that measures student achievement in learning gains, graduation, acceleration success and maintaining a focus on those who need the most support.

The drum line led staff members back into the school cafeteria, where another surprise awaited them.

The admin team turned the cafeteria into a 90s glow party with colorful, neon accessories and decorations that glowed in the dark. There were hats, fanny packs, light-up hair scrunchies and more.

A special guest was invited to kick off the back-to-school welcome. Superintendent Jason Wysong praised teachers and staff for their hard work and urged them to maintain momentum.

Go, Eagles!
