A unique elective Parrish Community High School offers is the Automotive program, which paves a possible career path for students who enroll in the program.

Recently the program was recognized by Gettel Automotive with a $25,000 grant, which was presented at a ceremony on October 5th, 2023. Among those in attendance were PCHS administration, students who are a part of the program, Automotive Instructor Sherman Ballard, Manatee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Wysong, and Gettel Automotive Chief Marketing Officer David Kelly.

The program also received a $25,000 grant from Gettel in January 2023.

Ballard expressed his gratitude for the donation. “Trying to get funding for a program like this sometimes can be difficult,” he said.

Ballard mentioned that some of his students were hired by Gettel and were “impressed” by their skills. “They said keep the students coming their way because they’re actually working out very good for them,” he said.

Ballard looks to put the grant towards high-level diagnostic, simulators, safety equipment, and VR glasses for students to use in the classroom.

The story was recently featured on the Manatee County School District’s ‘Good News’ page. In the article, PCHS Principal Daniel Bradshaw quoted, “We are extremely grateful for the large contribution Gettel Automotive has made to our automotive program. Their generosity and partnership will contribute to our program’s goal of becoming one of the best in the state.”

Parrish’s Automotive Program is a 4-year program that starts with Maintenance and Light Repair, with students continuing to build on their knowledge through the years they are enrolled. Some of the certifications offered include Automotive Service Safety and Service Pollution Prevention; Engine Repair; Brakes; Electrical; Heating; A/C; Engine Performance; Suspension; and Steering.
