This year, 20 Parrish Community High School students were nominated for the 2024 Golden Herald Awards. The Golden Herald Awards were once again presented by Manatee Memorial Hospital and were awarded on April 11.
The awards program was started in 1978 by the Bradenton Herald to honor remarkable Manatee County high school seniors for their service to the community and their school. There are 16 categories that high schools can enter up to two seniors, and each must go through an application process to qualify for the award ceremony. First, students submit their applications to their student committees who, under the guidance of their principal, will select two students for each category. Then, those selected undergo interviews conducted by Golden Herald judges. The students are graded based on their answers to one of the three essay prompts. They are also asked personal questions about their academic achievements and hobbies. Finally, students attend the Golden Herald Awards Ceremony at the SCF Neel Preforming Arts Center.
During the ceremony, two students are selected for each of the 16 categories; one will win first place and one will win honorable mention. Three of our PCHS seniors won awards for their service and dedication. Sullivan Morris won her category in business, Madyson Greenman received an honorable mention for journalism, and Jocelyn Lerma received an honorable mention for foreign language.
“There were so many talented people there, and I was so excited that I had won. It was such a great opportunity,” said Morris. For winning her category, Morris received $1,800 dollars in scholarship money and a Golden Herald plaque.
For their honorable mentions, both Greenman and Lerma received $700 in scholarship money. “I was really happy when I was picked because there were so many amazing students there and it was so interesting to hear what everyone had accomplished. It was just a wonderful experience all around,” said Greenman.
The Golden Herald Awards happen every year near the end of the school year. Seniors interested in it for next year should talk to their counselors about requirements and applications.
