Brittney Maroon – PCHS Bulletin

Being a student athlete is one of the most admirable qualities a high school student can achieve, and it comes with great dedication and sacrifice. Participating in high school sports comes with many academic and athletic requirements. The Florida High School Athletic Association keeps track of each teams’ combined GPA, and teams are ranked by their academic accomplishments at the end of the season.

As a school athletic program, Parrish Community finished 4th overall in class 5A with 86 points. This is the highest finish in school history, with numerous sports earning a top 10 ranking.

To qualify, teams must have a specific number of eligible athletes (varies per sport) and have a 3.0 unweighted GPA. Parrish Community’s athletic director, Shawn Trent, holds student athletes to an extremely high standard and could not be more proud of the work they have put into their careers. “I hold them to a higher standard; I think our coaches hold them to a higher standard.  When you are a part of a team, you are expected to be a leader and do the best that you can, not only in your sport but in school and in the community”.

He expresses how proud he is of Girls Cross Country and Softball placing 1st in the state for this achievement as well. “I think it is great, shows a lot of dedication to not only their sport but doing what is right in the classroom as well. I hope it promotes the sports program; it establishes our level of respect not only for sports but also for the real meaning of Student Athlete”.

Parrish Community High School is lucky to have such dedicated and hardworking students that are willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to be amazing at what they do.
