Key Clubs Provides Volunteer Opportunities
Casey Hurley – PCHS Bulletin
The Key Club at Parrish Community is focusing this year on providing community service projects for students. Many students in high school seek volunteer opportunities for college and scholarship programs, such as Bright Futures. Others just want to give back to their community.
Volunteering is more than just helping people out with simple tasks in the community; it could also be done at school events such as sports, games, and dances. Key Club provides opportunities for both settings.
Key Club has two new advisors this year: Jennifer Akers and Katherine Driggers, shining a new light on giving back to the community. Akers took over the club to provide students with opportunities to volunteer.
“I am excited to support students serving the community. It has been a big learning experience about how to be effective in connecting students with service opportunities. I am really impressed with the number and dedication of students wanting to serve,” said Akers.
Key Club meets regularly to discuss hours and opportunities for serving the community.
For example, from November 11-22 they are collecting non-perishable foods as part of the Mayor’s Feed the Hungry food drive. To persuade classes to donate, the class that collects the most will earn a donut party.
Students interested in joining can pick up an application outside Akers’ classroom in room 5-228.
