On a warm, fall day in Florida, Principal Michael Mullen was excited to talk about a field day event taking place to reward students for excelling in academics.
Before the event begins, however, he smiles in anticipation of a monthly visit from community members who have become “angels” for King Middle School.

MeriLynn Blum and Roxi Johncox, both members of the SAS Team. SAS, stands for School Attendance Support, Inc., a non-profit organization addressing school attendance barriers.
SAS works directly with staff from four schools, including Principal Mullen and school nurse, Jody Rayan, R.N., fulfilling wishes for students.
Today’s delivery to two middle schools included $1,600+ worth of water bottles, snacks, feminine hygiene products, dental and hygiene products, t-shirts and much more.
Students know a special closet contains those much needed items and notifies staff when they need something.
This ensures that students don’t allow barriers to prevent them from attending school, and they’re able to stay there if a problem arises.
Imagine a student having a nose bleed, and wanting to go home because of a ruined shirt. A fresh, donated t-shirt is available for the students for free.
Studies show students present more often in the classroom, improve their academic performance.
School Attendance Support also provides assistance for families of students without housing. There’s laundry detergent, soap and toilet paper to take home.
They currently serve Ballard Elementary, Manatee Elementary, King Middle and Lee Middle Schools.
Their goal is to expand with increased support. An army of volunteers, many of them former educators, say they’re delighted to serve their community.
