Prior to her senior year at Bayshore High School, Kaylee E. - a student journalist and athlete - will spend an inspiring week in the nation's capital.
Kaylee was accepted into Close Up's Institute for Deliberative Democracy, and she's the only Manatee County attendee this summer.
During the week-long National Youth Impact Summit, high school students from across the country will gather to discuss national issues, form lasting solutions and learn how to effectively advocate for causes in front of public officials. Topics could range from climate change to COVID-19.
The program was developed in partnership with Stanford University's Center for Deliberative Democracy, devoted to research into democracy and public opinion; and National Network of Schools in Partnership, an organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for all young people.
During the program, Kaylee will attend workshops, hear from guest speakers and have the chance to participate in social activities and explore Washington, D.C.
"I'm excited about meeting new people, learning things and having new experiences," said Kaylee. "I think the most pressing issue in my generation right now is Women's Rights and I look forward to listening to my fellow peers' thoughts, too."
Kaylee's teacher, Mrs. Faulk, recommended this opportunity to her. The former journalist turned educator is the advisor for the Paw Print student newspaper. She is excited that her young reporter was chosen for this experience.
The Close Up program takes place in late June and appeals to students interested in current events, government, and/or public policy.
