Fresh from back-to-back state championship wins, a Lakewood Ranch High School softball coach and player are named 'Best in the State.'
Coach TJ Goelz was chosen as the softball 7A Coach of the Year by Florida Dairy Farmers.
According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, he has recorded a 122-10 record during five seasons as coach of Lakewood Ranch.
Pitcher Ella Dodge was named Class 7A Player of the Year for softball.
The sophomore is credited with setting a school record for victories, and helping the Mustangs win 8-2 in the title game, earning their second straight state championship.
The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program recognizes all 30 FHSAA-sanctioned sports in the state.
Past winners have gone on to star at collegiate and professional levels, including the Olympic Games.
Many athletic programs consider this award the "Florida high school version of the Heisman Trophy".
