School bus drivers, bus aides, dispatchers, vehicle maintenance technicians and other transportation staff gathered at Manatee High School on Monday.
Coffee in hand, many were heard saying they were so glad to be back at work.
The day-long "Welcome Back" transportation conference is held prior to the start of each new school year.
Employees received new gear, including rain jackets, and shared hugs with colleagues they missed during the summer months.
Some drivers take the entire time off, while others drive school buses for summer feeding and school programs.
Superintendent Cynthia Saunders thanked the staff for playing a critical role in our community.
"You are the first smile our students see at the start of their day," Ms. Saunders said. "If it weren't for you, many students wouldn't have a way to get to school for their education."
She also recognized several employees who have served the district for more than 30 years.
Deputy Superintendent Doug Wagner and Transportation Director Jamie Warrington also spoke to the transportation employees.
The 2022-23 school year starts on Wednesday, August 10th.
Welcome back, Transportation. We're glad you're along for the ride!
