Student pose at Envirothon

Teams from Manatee High and Palmetto High competed in the Manasota Regional Envirothon competition last week.

Envirothon is an outdoor natural resource education program for high school students in grades 9-12, testing their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and more.

It was held on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey, and brought together teams from Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

Students were encouraged to work together to answer questions and participate in hands-on projects focused on environmental issues.

Congratulations to Manatee High School students and their science teacher, Boonie Elswick, for earning first, second and third places in the regional contest.

Members of the winning team include: Rosetta V., Zachary C., Shalalai E., Stephanie B., Henry Z., Daniel V. (alternate), Nirapai E. (alternate).

The Hurricanes placed third overall out of 29 teams, which makes them eligible to advance to the state competition this spring.

Palmetto High science teacher, Natalie Richard, and FFA teacher Julie Tillet, brought teams to the competition, as well.

Science and Health Education Specialist, Amber Platowski, congratulates all of the young scientists and educators on their hard work!
