students walking along beach

8th grade science students at Palm View K-8 have been actively engaged in hands-on learning experiences that have brought their classroom lessons to life. Recently, they demonstrated their understanding of density by conducting experiments with various liquids and solids.

pv science 2a

Using the formula D=M/V (mass/volume), the students meticulously measured the mass of liquids and calculated their density.

They confirmed their calculations by pouring the liquids into graduated cylinders. Additionally, they explored the density of solids using cubes provided by Woz Ed and calculated the density of irregular objects through water displacement.

In another exciting activity, the 8th graders learned to determine the acidity, neutrality, or basicity of seven different substances using universal pH indicator strips and red cabbage juice.

They even observed a chemical reaction by blowing their breath into a flask containing bromothymol blue and water, which reacted with the carbon dioxide from their breath.

Our 7th grade science students have also been busy with their own experiments. They investigated how light behaves when it interacts with various objects, observing and recording their findings.

This activity helped them understand the concepts of reflection, refraction, and absorption of light.

They also visited Robinson Preserve for a field trip that combined learning about Florida Science Standards and exploring career opportunities in marine biology.

This trip was part of a series of project-based learning activities in collaboration with Minorities In Shark Sciences (MISS) and EarthEcho.

Thanks to MISS's sponsorship, the students participated in the field trip at no cost. They will upload the data they collected to the EarthEcho website and participate in the EarthEcho Water Challenge.

These engaging activities not only enhance our students' understanding of scientific concepts but also inspire them to explore potential careers in science. We are proud of their enthusiasm and dedication to learning!
