The Stewart Elementary Olympics is a cherished annual fundraiser for the school community. Each grade level represents a different country, such as America, Australia, Egypt, Ireland, Italy, and Mexico. Students dress in spirited costumes, carry props, and parade around the parking lot, reminiscent of the Olympic opening ceremony, while proud families cheer them on.
This year featured a special performance by a pipe band, which included both a parent and a teacher from Stewart Elementary. Leslie Jones, a fourth-grade teacher with 33 years of experience in the school district, learned to play the bagpipes about six months ago. She is also a talented oboist.
Her pipe major, Bob Fair, considers playing the bagpipes a passionate hobby. They are members of Lion Rampant Pipe & Drum, a local pipe band that plays traditional Scottish and Irish tunes throughout the community.
They were joined by Lieutenant Arika Cooper of the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, who proudly wore her fire medic uniform shirt paired with a traditional Scottish kilt, a combination she has worn since her days in Riverview High School's Kiltie Band. Lt. Cooper's daughter is in fifth grade at Stewart.
