We want to recognize the following teachers for bringing students to compete at the Manasota Envirothon 2024.
The event was a great opportunity to celebrate environmental education at a beautiful venue, Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey (south Sarasota County), Florida.
Congrats to Manatee High School students, coached by Mrs. Elswick, who took home First Place for the county and Second Place overall for the Manasota Region!
Their top team will now head to the state competition in April!
The teachers are listed below, along with a description of Envirothon from the regional coordinator, Gail Somodi from the UF extension office in Sarasota.
Boonie Elswick-MHS
Natalie Richard-PHS
Robin Routh-SEHS
Envirothon is an outdoor natural resource education program for high school students in grades 9-12. In the field, students are challenged to work as a team to answer written questions and conduct hands-on projects focusing on environmental issues.
Students from all over Florida attend to explore the environment in five disciplines: Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics, Soils, and a current environmental issue.
The contest on January 25th is a regional contest. The top team from each county (Manatee and Sarasota) will qualify for the State Contest in late spring.
The top school from Florida qualifies for a national contest - the NCF Envirothon held in the summer.
