Summer Bridge Program: Building a Strong Foundation for Kindergarten Success
The Summer Bridge, a 100-hour program, is designed to provide our youngest learners with the extra support they need before starting Kindergarten. Launched in June at Daughtrey Elementary and Rogers Garden-Bullock Elementary, this program has already made a significant impact.
When the students first entered their classrooms, many were unfamiliar with their ABCs or even how to spell their own names. Fast forward to now, and these same students are proudly reading.
Their excitement is evident as they eagerly call out, "Teacher, teacher," to show their work to Tiffany Roberts, a dedicated first-grade teacher from Moody Elementary. Ms. Roberts responds with high-fives, resulting in smiles all around.
This summer, Ms. Roberts is collaborating with Teacher Aide Danielle Teel. Their classroom theme, "Under the Sea," has added an element of fun for everyone involved.
On Wednesday, the students learned that the dorsal surface of a starfish is called a ray. They gathered around Ms. Roberts and enthusiastically acted out the book she was reading.
During a "brain break," the children demonstrated a version of the Hokey Pokey dance, paired with wooden shapes to help them learn handwriting.
Jennifer Harrison, ELA K-2 Curriculum Specialist, describes the program as a game-changer. "It's strengthening the students' early literacy skills and teaching them about classroom procedures and etiquette, like raising their hands and being kind to others," she explains.
The skills they have acquired this summer will undoubtedly put them ahead of the class when school starts on August 11th. This nearly two-month-long program is laying a solid foundation for their future academic success.
