At Miller Elementary School, the district's youngest students are embarking on a journey of learning and discovery. This summer program, designed for future kindergarten graduates, offers 300 hours of classroom time to prepare these eager learners for the exciting world of kindergarten.
Eligible students, who turned four years old on or before September 1, 2024, and haven't already attended VPK, are welcomed into this enriching experience.
In two classrooms, Ms. Mendez and Ms. Kopinsky lead the way with their passion for teaching, supported by dedicated teacher aides, Ms. Bates and Ms. Bermundez. Together, they create an environment where curiosity and creativity flourish.
Last week, the children gathered around to read "The Rainbow Fish," a story that sparked their imaginations. Inspired by the tale, they eagerly dove into an art project using paper plates, glue, and glitter to craft their own shimmering creations. The room buzzed with excitement as each child proudly displayed their unique masterpiece.
Students also broke into smaller groups for personalized phonics instruction. Ms. Mendez and Ms. Kopinsky, along with their aides, provided one-on-one guidance, helping each child develop essential reading skills.
In addition to phonics, students engaged in various hands-on activities. Some explored by building magnets, constructing imaginative structures and learning about shapes and balance. Others embraced their inner doctors and veterinarians, role-playing and caring for their stuffed animal patients. These activities not only fostered creativity but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving.
As the summer program continues, the future kindergarteners at Miller Elementary School are gaining confidence, making new friends, and discovering the joy of learning. With the support of their dedicated teachers and aides, they are well on their way to a successful start in kindergarten.
The 2025 Summer VPK program was also offered at Mills Elementary School.
