a young writer holds up a first place award for her essay.

On Monday, a shy fifth grader found her voice in front of her peers while reading an award-winning essay filled with heart. Jazzmyne W.’s words painted vivid memories of her grandmother, from the crinkle of a Werther’s Original in church to an apron dusted in flour “like snow” while baking.
