On Monday, a shy fifth grader found her voice in front of her peers while reading an award-winning essay filled with heart. Jazzmyne W.’s words painted vivid memories of her grandmother, from the crinkle of a Werther’s Original in church to an apron dusted in flour “like snow” while baking.

She was recognized by the Manatee County Retired Educators Association (MCREA), a group of former educators who continue to champion young writers each year with awards, gift cards, and encouragement.

Standing beside her, proud teacher Jessica Holt watched as Jazzmyne learned her essay earned top honors across the multi-county district—advancing to represent Manatee County at the state level. Nearby, her mom captured the moment, overcome with pride.

Also celebrated was third place winner Olivia B., along with honorable mention recipients who were recognized for their outstanding work.

Special thanks to the dedicated retired educators who made this moment possible including: Kris Williamson (30 years teaching science, retired from Lakewood Ranch High School), Candy DeLazzer (47 years teaching language arts at Southeast High and retired from Lakewood Ranch High), and judge Sharon Hundley, also retired from Lakewood Ranch High.

Their legacy continues to inspire the next generation. Moments like these remind us—#ManateeSchoolsGoodNews is everywhere ✨
