The Varsity Volleyball team has been pushing through their regular season. They have been encouraged by the support shown in the student section of recent home games.
On September 4, the first themed home game of the season was against Braden River. The theme was “Luau Out”. The attendance was amazing with the whole student section filled.
The students cheered for the Varsity girls the whole game with the SGA students leading the chants. While the girls did not win, they put up a good fight, and the enthusiasm definitely played an important role in that.
Next, on Sept. 12-13, the Varsity girls played in a tournament at Wiregrass Ranch Complex. They played five teams and ended up winning two of those games. This highlighted areas of improvement for the team to keep working on.
This weekend also officially added a new addition to the Varsity team: Sophomore Natalie Metzger. Metzger was originally on the JV team but has been practicing with Varsity. She joined them for the tournament and was even a starter at recent games.
Metzger said she felt “a strong sense of achievement” with her promotion to the Varsity team. She said her goal since joining her freshman year was to play “with the higher ups.”
She feels that focusing on her attitude to become a better teammate really helped her earn that spot.
Coach Danielle Stevenson cited her strong work ethic as another factor in her promotion.
“I give all athletes in my program an opportunity to move up within the program. The girls on the Varsity team must continue to earn their spots throughout the season as well,” said Stevenson.
The most recent themed home game was Sep. 16 against Palmetto. The theme was “Parrish Out” and the outcome was once again great. The Freshman and Varsity teams won with clean games. JV did not win, but their hard work was evident.
The current record for the Varsity team is 7-13. They will recognize their seniors, Mia Davis and Madeleine Winslow, in a home game against Southeast on Thursday, October 9. They are hoping the student section will be packed again to cheer them on.
After senior night, the focus shifts to districts for the start of their state series play.
