Parrish Community High School’s cross-country program has run six scheduled meets so far this season, competing at schools across southwest Florida as the Bulls build toward their championship season. Many of the team’s runners have been posting personal bests at the meets, showing steady improvement as the season progresses.
At the North Port Invitational on Sept. 19, senior Logan Goelz recorded a season-best 17:22.5 for Parrish, one of several personal records at that event. The Bulls are competing tightly with other local programs. Goelz says he hopes to break the school record for 5k by the end of the season.
Earlier in the month at the IMGA XC Summit Challenge (Sept. 6), junior Caleb Gibbs also set a personal record of 17:46.3, continuing to show that the team is improving more at every race. The IMGA meet drew strong competition from the area and the Parrish athletes fought well.
Throughout the season’s first half, Parrish ran the Lemon Bay Invitational (Aug. 23), and the Stampede Sprint at Wiregrass Ranch (Aug. 30), two meets that greatly tested the team’s abilities. Parrish runners battled difficult competition and posted a combination of solid team finishes and individual efforts that they’ll continue to build on.
Goelz said in the coming weeks the team hopes to work on intervals and speed work, they want to “get their mind right” before their championship season. The freshmen and sophomores have stepped up in meets this year to complement the hard work of the juniors and seniors. The seniors will be honored on Senior Night near the end of the season for their dedication to the team.
Looking ahead, Parrish will use the coming meets to continue working towards their goals. The team’s recent personal records and closer team scoring indicate momentum is building as the postseason comes into view.
