The 2025-2026 chapter of Parrish Community High School’s National Honor Society hosted their first major service event of the year. They went to Palm View Elementary and volunteered for their Trunk or Treat event for Halloween.

The National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. To join the organization, students who submit their applications must have a clean record, letters of recommendation, minimum 3.5 GPA, and exhibit leadership qualities.

Students who are accepted must meet an academic standard. They are also expected to volunteer to their school and community without compensation and to embody high standards while maintaining a clean disciplinary record.

This year's NHS officer team includes:

  • President: Alyssa Little

  • Vice President: Sianalis Thomson

  • Secretary: Kyle Ni

  • Treasurer: Aiden Patterson

  • Historian: Savanna White

Every year, the NHS must host a service event. Previous years included a gift donation drive. However, this year, NHS decided to help Palm View with their Trunk or Treat event. The event was brought to attention when a former administrator at Parrish, now principal of the elementary school, reached out to NHS advisor Mercedes Wildman and asked for help.

President Little provides enthusiasm for the success of the event: “I thought the event was a lot of fun, and I think the NHS members would agree with me,” Little said. “It was really rewarding to get to play games, hand candy out to, and face paint the Palm View students who seemed like they were having a really great time!”

Students who participated either volunteered to help with a haunted house or they set up their own station with games such as Are you smarter than a 5th grader, cornhole toss, face painting, and bowling.

With help from the committee of the Trunk or Treat event, the event was able to run smoothly. "The event wasn’t difficult to set up because all of the committees did a really good job preparing beforehand and getting everything lined up so the event could run as smoothly as possible.” Little states.

While next year remains uncertain for what service event they will help host, Little encourages that NHS continues to help Palm View. “As I am a senior, I’m unsure of what next year's board will choose to do for NHS’s service event. But I highly recommend they continue to help at Palm View as it was an amazing event,” Little said.

For the rest of the year, NHS will continue to engage in service and leadership projects. They also offer tutoring after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the media center. Those who meet the qualifications for the organization will be invited to complete an application in the spring.
