The school library hosted the second annual Literacy Gingerbread House Contest, as well as a book raffle to support literacy before winter break.
There were 24 entries for the gingerbread house contest, more than double the entries from last year. The houses were on display in the media center for judging during exam week.
The top 5 winning entries were:
1st - Jasmine Cornwell - Stranger Things

2nd - Alayna Freier and Brylee Johnson - How the Grinch Stole Christmas

3rd - Lexi Brielmann - The Pillars of Earth

4th - Melinda Channon - Cinderella

5th - Sierra Rivera - Charlie Brown Christmas

The gingerbread contest really brings books alive, so people have different images in their minds of what scenes from books look like. “It’s so interesting to see how some takes from the same book turn out so differently,” said Reading Coach Dana Licata.
There were six books available for the raffle. The drawing took place on Thursday, Dec. 18 for students to take home for winter break. Each book has a winter theme.
The goal of these events is to bring more students into the media center, and to bring more attention to books. Licata said these “winter reading land” events “brings kids in to do different activities, read books, and hang out to do work during lunch.”
Literacy will be celebrated again during Literacy Week January 26-30. Hopefully, these fun events will motivate more students to come to the library and check out more books.
