Bulletin: Student Interests

PCHS Bulletin – Paige Harlow

When it comes to movie buzz, our school community has spoken loud and clear. In a recent Instagram poll, 72% of students voted for Zootopia 2 as their most anticipated release, while 28% cast their vote for Wicked: For Good. The numbers tell the opinions, but the excitement behind each film warrants a closer look.

Disney’s Zootopia was a cultural phenomenon when it debuted, blending sharp social commentary with lovable characters like Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. The sequel promises to expand on that world, diving deeper into themes of diversity, justice, and friendship, all wrapped in the studio’s signature humor and heart. For many students, this feels like a nostalgic return to a movie they grew up with, which explains the overwhelming support in our poll.

On the other hand, Wicked: For Good taps into Broadway’s legendary musical roots. Based on the beloved stage production, this film brings the rivalry and friendship of Elphaba and Glinda to the big screen. While it may not have captured the majority vote, its 28% share shows that a significant group of students are eager to see how the magic of Oz translates to cinema for a second time following the first Wicked movie released in November of last year.

For fans of musicals, especially our notable Bulls Theatre Company, this is a rare chance to see a theatrical masterpiece reimagined for a wider audience.

The poll results highlight a prominent divide in taste. For example, Haven Wood (Fr.) stated that though Wicked: For Good was highly anticipated, there were “too many filler scenes” and the movie overall felt longer than it needed to.

Animated sequels with familiar characters dominate the mainstream, while musicals still hold a passionate following. Both films represent different sides of storytelling, one rooted in modern allegory, the other in timeless fantasy. So whether you’re counting down the days for Judy Hopps’ next case or ready to belt out “Defying Gravity” in the theater, this winter’s movie lineup offers something for everyone.

Our school’s enthusiasm proves that cinema continues to be a shared cultural event, sparking debates, excitement, and anticipation long before the opening credits roll.
