After a strong start to the season, the Parrish Community Winter Guard has proved that a promotion can’t stop their continued success.

The group has been performing at competitions in the Florida Federation of Color Guards Circuit (FFCC) and was recently promoted to the Scholastic A division, after performing well in Scholastic AA, their previous division. The promotion hasn’t stopped the winter guard, who went on to win their first competition in Scholastic A.

They also competed in a Winter Guard International (WGI) regional competition, where they advanced to finals, an impressive feat for the group.

According to senior and guard captain Kayla Reynolds, even with their success, confidence in competitions can still be a challenge.

When asked about if the team feels unsure before performing, she said “definitely, but we try to calm ourselves down and focus on connecting to the emotions of the performance, each other, and the audience.”

Much of the team's improvement this season has been a result of focus and determination during rehearsal. “We work on performance, specifically how to best tell the story,” Reynolds said.

While the audience only ever sees a routine that lasts a few minutes, the winter guard puts hours of time into their show that often goes unnoticed. “People don’t always see the work it takes to be in color guard,” Reynolds said. “It's about technique and consistency. We have to learn the choreography, handle equipment, and watch our timing.”

After early success, the winter guard has high hopes for the rest of the season, with Reynolds holding confidence in the team’s capability of winning a state title.

With a new goal of a state championship in mind, the winter guard will keep working hard until championships at the end of the month, and with their current success, they very well could be on their way to achieving this goal.
