This convention is an annual five-day event for film and TV Production students from middle and high schools across the country. It features film, television, media competitions, workshops, and networking. There were many contests; Sunday and Monday of the event were general contests where students were given a timeframe to film and edit a feature within a given prompt and genre such as short film, human interest, sports panel, and commentary. There is also a Crazy Eights competition where school teams are given eight hours to put together a feature aligned with a given prompt.
Deckman described how PCHS competed in the Crazy Eights, “We had eight hours to get out and put together a news show.”
TV Production teacher Erin Lisch found the convention to be great for the students, saying “They were able to compete in contests, participate in workshops, listen to professional panel discussions and meet with various video companies and colleges offering film/broadcasting programs. They learned various new skills and implemented it into their own films and broadcasts.”
Thinking about the student's overall experience, Lisch found the convention to have great networking chances to interact with people around the world and a great way to get students to work efficiently as possible.
“It was a great learning experience on how to work under extremely tight deadlines!” Lisch said. “It also made students work quickly on their feet and being able to pivot if something doesn't go exactly their way. We were able to also collaborate and meet people from across the country and the world, so it was awesome being able to bounce ideas off each other. There's also "pin trading" where we swapped our PCHS pin for other school pins; we had some as far as Wales!”
The STN National Convention was an amazing opportunity for the TV Production students, and there are great ambitions for them to attend next year's convention in Long Beach, California to show the West Coast what these students have in store!
