The PCHS Track and Field team competed in the Class 4A District 11 Championship meet on Friday, April 17 at Riverview High School (Tampa). The girls took third place overall.

Going into the post season, Coach Antwan Wright highlighted athletes Bianca Grindo, Alana Price, McKayla Kvapil, Riley Michaud as impact athletes. They are ranked in the top 25 in the state and within the top 150 in the country.

All four will advance to regionals in addition to others who secured a first or second place finish in their event.

First Place

800m – McKayla Kvapil

Girls 4x800 relay – Kayla Hawk, Madison Shatkus, Stella Joseph, McKayla Kvapil

Shot Put – Bianca Grindo

400m – Fredrick Andrew

Long Jump – Riley Michaud

Triple Jump – Riley Michaud

The girls 4x800 relay also set a new school record.

Second Place

100m – Alana Price

200m – Alana Price

3200m – Kayla Hawk

Girls 4x400 relay – Giselle Barahona, McKayla Kvapil, Tamea Gibson, Alana Price

Triple Jump – Greta Backes

Discus – Biance Grindo

200m – Derwins Simeus

Boys 4x100 Relay – Derwins Simeus, Riley Michaud, Fredrick Andrew, Aiden Byers

High Jumps – Riley Michaud

Additionally, Gamar’Riya Howell will advance in the shotput and discus events. The team will also bring their Boys 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. The Regional Championship will take place May 2 at Charlotte High School.

“Individually, we had some kids do a great job at Districts,” said senior Fredrick Andrew.

Andrews is seeded first in the 400m for regionals.

“There is some pressure as the first seed. My goal is to get to states and to get there I either need to win or place in top four to have a chance,” Andrews said.

Prior to districts, the team competed in the Mantee County Championship meet on April 10 at Manatee High School. The girls won for the second year in a row, and the boys took second place.

4 x 400m relay - Caleb Gibbs, Derwins Simeus, Taeghen Mitchell, Frederick Andrew

Derwins Simeus’s events also set the new school record with a time of 10.54 in the 100m and 21.60 in the 200m.
