The Parrish Winter Guard season has come to a close after their final performance at the Florida Federation of Colorguard Circuit (FFCC) State Championships on April 3. The end of the season marks months of hard work and achievements, but also months of building a family within the activity.

Senior and captain Kayla Reynolds said that before taking the floor for the last time, “the team looked around at each other and felt something meaningful within our color guard family. It’s one of my favorite moments because it’s the reason I’ve done it all four years of high school and why I wanted to become a captain.”

She said her goal in leadership was to create that kind of environment. “I wanted to help make the team feel like a second family to everyone.”

Over the course of the season, the team grew in many ways. The team members developed confidence and level of ability while also forming connections with each other.

One of the most notable performances came at FFCC Braden River, where the group competed in a new division and won first place.

“We came into it thinking we weren’t scoring high that day, and we left with a first place trophy,” Reynolds said. “It was a performance that we all had fun in, connected to each other, touched the audience, and performed our show the best.”

In their final show at championships, they placed 7th in the Scholastic A division with a score of 79.210, an excellent result for the season.

For Reynolds, winter guard has been a consistent part of her high school experience. As the season ends, she said she will miss performing and the specific experience that comes with it.

“I’m going to miss the feeling of being on the floor with my team, looking up to the judges, and connecting to the audience,” she said. “It’s a feeling that can’t be found in most sports or performing arts.”

With the season finished, the team moves forward without its senior members, but they will continue to establish expectations of success and family in the coming seasons.
