Parrish Community trailed behind George Steinbrenner for the academic championship after winter sports. Softball, Girls Tennis, and Beach Volleyball each earned state titles in their class, significantly impacting the overall win for Parrish Community High School.
Additional state champions include Girls Weightlifting from the winter season and Volleyball from the fall season.
Athletic director Shawn Trent explained that each sport is based off their average team GPA; the GPA must be better than a 3.0 to qualify. The overall state championship is based off a point system where you get 10 points for being champion, 9 points for runner up and so on. Top 10 schools in each sport earn points to earn a total at the end of the year.
“Thank you to all the coaches that preach academics to our athletes and thank you to all the teachers that put in the hard work with our STUDENT-ATHLETES,” said Trent in an email to PCHS staff.
Girls Tennis Head Coach Erin Lisch said she preaches that academics come first. If an athlete's grade drops below a certain threshold, they cannot practice or play in a match.
“We’ve set our standards high,” said Lisch, “these students love the game of tennis and don’t want to give that up if it’s coming down to bad grades.”
She went on to credit them for their rigorous course load and ability to receive top grades. “The girls’ tennis team had the highest GPA of all the athletic teams here at PCHS... Our boys' team had the third highest GPA. Both teams, I believe, are major contributors to the academic championship,” said Lisch.
Softball holds a similar mentality, having now won the academic championship four years in a row. It’s no coincidence that this is also the fourth year the team has made a run in the state playoffs.
“Academics is always our priority,” said Head Coach Erin Spivey.
