The annual Battle of the Books Competition took place at Braden River High School on April 28. Parrish took first place in this competition for the first time in school history.

Braden River High School is the reoccurring location where the competition is held, and at the end they are presented with trophies and medals. During this competition they do a Kahoot against all the schools in Manatee County that have a book club.

The competing members included Mia Trahan, Briana Rodonis, Katherine Sheffer, and Laurie Fevrier. The maximum number of students allowed to compete per school is 5.

Battle of the Books is a competition based on 15 books per year. While the topics of these books vary, they are typically fantasy and realistic fiction. Some are based on mental health or other topics.

At Parrish, each member of the club is only required to read up to 5 books to compete.

Katherine Sheffer says that she helped co-found the Book Club with Briana Rodonis during their freshman year. They had both previously done it through their middle schools and found it to be a great opportunity for those who love to read.

Sheffer talks about the amazing friendships she has made through the club and how much she loves the experience of it.

They meet in the media center with Media Specialist Merecedes Wildman, who is their club advisor.

Next year’s president Laurie Fevrier said she felt this year went well due to their focus reading the books and practicing.

Fevrier originally planned to run for next year’s social media manager. However, the graduating seniors convinced her to go for president instead due to her hard work, dedication, and passion.

Next year, Fevruer said she “hopes to find more creative ways to make everyone in the club feel more included.”
