The Track and Field team traveled to Jacksonville to compete in the FHSAA state championship on Saturday, May 9.
The individual qualifiers were Bianca Grindo (Discus and Shot Put), Fredrick Andrews (400m), Derwins Simeus (100m), Riley Michaud (High Jump), Alana Price (200m), and McKayla Kvapil (800m). Additionally, Simeus, Michaud, Andrews, and Aiden Byers qualified in the Boys 4x100 relay.
Michaud won the triple jump on his first attempt with a new school record of 14.91m. This also places him seventh overall in Florida and 43rd in the country. He is also the first state champion in Parrish track and field history. Michaud said he felt more focused this year and worked hard to achieve these victories. He is excited to build on this momentum next year.
Grindo placed seventh in both discus and shot put. Additionally, she finished the season ranked 17th in the state for shot put.
Price took fifth in the 100m with a new school record of 11.67. She is ranked 19th in the state. Price said she is proud of her accomplishments this season compared to last season. “There have been so many improvements, and I am excited for next season,” she said. “The team has had each other's back and stayed true to one another.”
Kvapil took fifth in the 800m with a new school record of 2:11.9. She is ranked 15th in the state.
Andrews took 12th place in the 400m. Coach Antwan Wright credited his “outstanding senior season” and said he has “established himself as one of the fastest 400m runners in the state.” In one month, Andrews claimed the Manatee County, district, and regional championship. Additionally, he was named athlete of the week by the Sarasota Herald Tribune for the week of April 27-May 2.
In all, track and field had a very successful season. However, numerous met the qualifying times and will continue their season with national meets including the Under Armour National meet hosted at IMG Academy May 29-31, and the Nike National meet hosted at the University of Oregon June 18-22.
