Congratulations to Ms. Lizbeth Karlsson for being named one of LMCU 25 Roots in Education grant recipients! The Good News team was there when she was surprised on Friday.
A dedicated educator for more than 20 years — including the last three at Daughtrey Elementary School — Mrs. Karlsson teaches Dual Language second grade and inspires students every day through her compassion, encouragement, and commitment to learning.
Selected for her dedication to uplifting students and encouraging their dreams, Mrs. Karlsson received $1,000 classroom grant to continue making a difference.

The Florida Department of Education released the Florida Value Added Model (VAM) Fiscal Transparency Tool, a web-based fiscal transparency tool that identifies public schools and districts with high academic achievement based on the ratio of classroom expenditures to total expenditures. VAM is intended to help taxpayers evaluate the financial efficiency of a school district with other similarly situated school districts. Our hearts are full after spending a short time at Daughtrey Elementary School’s winter wonderland! We’re so grateful to be invited to capture the grateful smiles and holiday cheer, which is the result of an incredible staff and support from their community partners.

Meet Mr. Bazell, Daughtrey Elementary school safety guardian!
A Southeast High graduate, Mr. Bazell is posted just down the road from schools he attended, Bayshore Elementary and Harllee (formerly Middle). He’s a former Bradenton Beach police officer who also served with the district’s Safety & Security team before joining the Dolphins.
His mission goes beyond safety. He makes it a point to learn the name of each student on campus. Every morning, he greets them at the front of the school alongside the principal, and no one heads to class without a fist bump from him.

Daughtrey Elementary School is diving into $3,000 of new reads thanks to the kindness of others! District media specialist Lori Pick delivered about a dozen boxes of brand-new books to media specialist Amy Johnson on Monday. They were donated by Books-A-Million (Bradenton) customers who gave during an annual #BackToSchool drive.
We met a group of fifth-grade Dolphins who were excited to see more of their favorites like Dog Man, I Survived, Power Rangers, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dragon Ball Z, and more - coming to their shelves soon!

Security Screening at Secondary Schools – Beginning Monday, August 11, 2025, all students and visitors at district middle and high schools will be screened each school day using a high-tech security scanner system.

School Board Seeks Civic-Minded Citizens to Join Audit Committee –
The School Board of Manatee County is seeking civic-minded citizens to serve as members of the Audit Committee. The Committee, which meets six times a year, recommends the appointment of the internal and external auditors; reviews the scope, plan and reports of the internal and external auditors; and assists in maintaining open communications between the selected auditors, the School Board and the District’s financial management. The Committee also reviews the collection and proper use of the funds raised through the one-half cent sales surtax for school capital outlay expenditures. Membership on the Committee requires an average of five-to-eight hours per month, with meetings scheduled every other month for three hours. The term is approximately three years.
Those interested in serving must:
• Live in Manatee County.
• Be a CPA (active or retired) or had employment experience in school district financial operations.
• Submit a letter expressing interest, provide contact information and provide a brief summary of their work experience.
Responses must be sent to the Manatee County School District, Attention: School Board Agency Clerk, P.O. Box 9069, Bradenton, Florida 34206-9069.
Interested individuals may obtain additional information about the Committee by emailing the School Board Agency Administrative Associate at cox3l@manateeschools.net.
