(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) senior Kiley Powers is a first-year lifter competing on the girls weightlifting team.

She is competing in both the Traditional and Olympic categories.

She had her first meet on Oct. 29 and competed in her first mock meet on Oct. 30.

Powers said, “The mock meet was fun, I walked in knowing it was okay to fail. There was a lot going on and it made me feel more prepared for my meet today.”

At her meet, Powers hoped to hit her max of 110 pounds for clean and jerk. She also had a goal of reaching her snatch and bench of 80 pounds.

Powers began practicing weightlifting with her friend from another high school for fun with no intention of joining the team, but she soon fell in love with weightlifting and now hopes to compete on a weightlifting team in college and continue to compete.

For her future, Power’s hopes to join a club at her college and compete there because she said, “weightlifting has become a part of me, and in a way, I compete in weightlifting for fitness because succeeding and adrenaline is fun.’

Her favorite lift to compete in is the snatch lift because it's different and challenging.

Powers concluded, “The experienced girls are very welcoming and have been very uplifting and helpful.”
