Olivia Clapcich- Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Language Arts teacher Jacob Garfield has started a new assignment that is challenging Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) students and has caught the attention of many.
In this assignment, students must make a movie trailer based on a real-life situation. While some may see this as an unusual assignment, Garfield has been using this for about five years and mentions how it is a success every year.
Garfield came up with this assignment idea from his love of movies. He thought that there could be a crossover from students writing an essay and making a movie trailer.
There are several goals to this task, “One of the goals is for students to carefully consider how a message can change depending on who the intended audience is,” stated Garfield.
Garfield continued, “Whether it's winning an argument, writing an essay, or crafting a film trailer, your communication style changes depending on who you are communicating with.”

Garfield believes that this assignment has always been a favorite by students and hopes that this task can help show off their creative side while also bonding with other students in the class.
Senior Elliana Wilner said, “I thought it was interesting to do because it wasn't like a regular assignment. We had a lot of time to complete it which allowed us to come up with a lot of ideas and collaborate with the rest of our group members.”
“I think it's a fun way for students to learn a lot of the same components of how to write an effective essay without actually writing an essay,” Garfield said.
Students have gotten very creative this year coming up with topics like mental health awareness, human trafficking, kidnapping, avoiding the downfalls of fame or success, and deforestation.
