Ranch Reflections are articles written by LRHS students and staff who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for Mustangs to branch out beyond traditional news stories.  In this edition an LRHS senior discusses her path to a career goal.

Kaitlynne Welte- Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)  - It’s interesting how life can lead you into the right direction based on a single decision. For me, that decision was enrolling in an accounting class on Florida Virtual School (FLVS).

I’ve always been objectively “good at math” but translating that skill into a career was not what I was planning on.

Taking classes in high school just seems like signing up for required courses that get you closer to graduation, but not necessarily closer to a calling for a career.

I’ve considered the medical field and being a chiropractor, but that never stuck with me. I’ve also thought about being a teacher or even briefly thought about being a therapist. However, I did not feel passionate about any of these careers, and nothing was clicking.

Then, almost on a whim, I signed up for an accounting class. The real reason I signed up for that FLVS class was that I could sleep in and come to school for 2nd period every day. But I never thought that signing up for an online class would point me to a career.

The online aspect of this class really drew me to be interested, too. I could work at my own pace, diving deep into debits and credits without the pressure of the traditional classroom. The teacher was surprisingly engaging, breaking down complex concepts with clarity and enthusiasm.

As I progressed, I genuinely started to enjoy it. The logic of it all, the way everything had to balance, the satisfaction of solving a complex problem. It was like a puzzle I couldn’t wait to solve. That FLVS class wasn't just a course; it was a revelation. It made me realize that my love for math could translate into a fulfilling and challenging career.

Now, I have applied to colleges to get a degree in accounting, and it was all for that FLVS accounting class.
