(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)--Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) is closed Monday for President’s Day.

Presidents’ Day started a long time ago to celebrate George Washington, the first president of the United States. At first, it was only about his birthday on Feb. 22.

Later, people wanted to honor other presidents too, like Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is on Feb. 12. In 1971, the government changed the day to the third Monday in Feb. so everyone could have a longer weekend.

“I’m excited to have a three-day weekend. It’s a nice break from school with all the stress from course registration that has been going on this past week,” said Junior Isla Stewart

Junior Lexi Scott shared, “Three-day weekends are always something I look forward to. It’s important to have time to take a break from school and to reflect on what is going on in our world. Presidents’ Day is a great example of this.”

This made it easier to celebrate all presidents, not just Washington.

The day is important because it helps people remember the leaders who helped shape America.

Many families visit museums or places connected to presidents to learn more. Besides that, stores have big sales on Presidents’ Day, so lots of people go shopping.

Even though having a day off from school is fun, the holiday is actually about honoring Presidents for their hard work. It reminds Americans how important it is to have strong leaders.
