Ranch Reflections are articles written by LRHS students and staff who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for Mustangs to branch out beyond traditional news stories. In this edition an LRHS sophomore talks about her own thought on a dream job and education.
Milly Harvey – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - I am a sophomore here at Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) and I think I’m a little out of step with my classmates.
They talk about their college and high-paying career plans. My goals are a bit different.
I dream of becoming a stay-at-home mom or a cosmetologist and I think that not going to a big college is okay.
College is a very normalized thing nowadays and it seems weird to most people when I say I’m not going to a major college, but it makes perfect sense to me.
So many kids are pressured by having to get a perfect grade point average, advanced classes, and attending their “dream” colleges but end up doing some job that wasn’t even their dream.
Even today, more women than men in the age group of 25-34 hold a bachelor’s degree. Statistics show that since of 2024, 47% of women have a bachelor’s while only 37% of men have one. However, this is not the route I want to take.

I would much rather do my dream job than go to some overrated college and be stuck learning more things, wasting years of my youth just to potentially end up in an unsatisfying office job.
My true dream for me is to become a hairdresser, travel the world, marry at a young age, and have kids and a family.
Everyone has different goals for their life and I’m not saying that going to a big college is a mistake at all, however, if you don’t even know what you want to do in life, don’t waste it on something you feel pressured to do.
Go live your life the way YOU want to.
