Milly Harvey – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Thanks to some recent accidents, e-bike and e-scooter laws have been more rigidly enforced, and there are some important things riders at Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) should know and be aware of.

For kids under the age of 16, riding a Class 3 electric bicycle is prohibited on public roads, bicycle paths, and shared roadways/pathways. Any person over the age of 16 must operate an e-bike on the bicycle path when available.

Basic safety rules also occur such as when approaching an intersection, e-bike riders must yield to any vehicle already in the intersection and treat it as being in a car.

Manatee Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Randy Warren stated, “Parents and guardians are encouraged to review these requirements with their children and ensure that any recreational riding takes place safely and legally. Working together, we can help protect our young riders and keep our roadways safe for everyone.”

A major piece of information riders must know is that the highest speed you can drive on an e-bike or any other vehicle sharing the sidewalk is 15 miles per hour.

Warren also said, “Operating an unregistered motor vehicle on a public roadway is a violation of Florida law and is classified as a second-degree misdemeanor.”

Mustangs are urged to know whether they are violating any of these rules, to pay attention and obey them for the safety of our school and surrounding area.
