Flag football has busy March

Avery Stewart – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - The Lakewood Ranch High School flag football team has had a busy past few weeks.

On March 24, they played against Venice and won 7-6. On March 26, they played against Braden River and won 18-7.

On March 27 they played Parrish but lost 20-13. And finally, they played on March 30 against Riverview and won 36-0.  Their most recent game was a Wednesday 48-0 loss to Tampa Catholic.

Junior Avary Shirley said, “Our team has been playing really good so far this season, and we will continue to improve as we play more games.”

After these three wins, their record changed to 8-4.  The Mustangs have yet to play a district game.  

Beach volleyball 5-2

Hayden Zimmerman – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) beach volleyball team continues their season with one win and two losses in the past two weeks.

LRHS beach volleyball faced Venice High School on March 24 by a score of 2-3.

Senior Julia Vendramini said, “Having a hard competition like Venice pushed us hard and will push the team towards training harder to hopefully come out with a win next matchup.”

In beach volleyball girls are seeded first through fifth, each playing their counterpart on the other team.

The team then faced Parrish Community High School on March 30 winning the match 5-0.

Freshman Brielle Redmond said, “Coming off of a loss pushed us hard to win this game and I think that all of our hard work paid off and helped us towards the win.”

The team finally faced Riverview High School on April 1, losing 0-5.   

The girls (5-2, 1-0 in district) next game is scheduled for 4 p.m., April 7 against Venice High School at home.

Mustangs ready for March Madness

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - The NCAA March Madness is coming to a close as the final four teams play Saturday.

The first game sees the third seed University of Illinois Fighting Illini playing the second seed University of Connecticut Huskies at 6:09 p.m.

The Fighting Illini have held all their opponents to 70 points or less and outscored them 317-239 across their four games.

The Huskies are coming off a close win against the Duke Blue Devils.  In the final seconds of the game, Freshman Braylon Mullins made a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left. This score sealed their third straight Final Four appearance and continues their chance at winning three championships in four years.

The second game sees the first seed University of Michigan Wolverines playing the first seed University of Arizona Wildcats.

The Wolverines are looking to continue their dominant March Madness.  They have outscored their opponents 381-291 across their four games. They are coming off their best game as they just beat the sixth seed Tennessee Volunteers by 33 points.

The Wildcats were one of the favorites going into the tournament and will look to continue their 13-game winning streak.

The winners of these two games will play on April 6 for the National Championship.
