Cate Kitcher- Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Orienteering Team had a meet at Sarasota’s Oscar Scherer State Park.

Orienteering, according to Time magazine, “…involves navigating through unfamiliar terrain, often in a forest, to locations circled on a detailed topographic map. (These spots are typically marked by a flag, and participants record proof that they were there, sometimes with a small electronic device.) You can only use your map and a compass—no smartphones or GPS—to guide the way.”

At this meet, the Lakewood Ranch team placed first in every division (Yellow, Orange, and Green). This led them to winning first overall at this specific meet and then second in the state overall as a team.

LRHS JROTC officer and senior Ingrid Pope said, “Lakewood Ranch received special recognition for beating other teams by a significant average time as a team, becoming a role model for what the other orienteering teams should aim for.”
