special needs prom vols

Ranch Reflections are articles written by LRHS students and staff who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for Mustangs to branch out beyond traditional news stories.  In this edition an LRHS student looks back on the opportunity to serve at the local special needs prom.

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – As vice president of the Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Key Club, I had the opportunity to volunteer at this year’s “Night With The Stars” Prom, a special prom designed for students with special needs, and it was one of the most meaningful and beautiful experiences I’ve been a part of.

We arrived early at 11a.m. at the Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club in Sarasota to help transform the space. From hanging decorations to setting up tables and making sure everything looked perfect, every detail mattered.

By the time guests began arriving, the room had completely changed. What started as a simple space turned into a full-on ball room filled with music, lights, and excitement. Once the prom began, our roles shifted from decorating to welcoming, dancing, and making sure every guest felt included.

One of the most memorable parts of the night was seeing how happy everyone was. Whether it was dancing, laughing, or just talking, it was clear how much this night meant to the participants.

Event sponsor Mary Anne McDevitt explained the purpose behind the event.

“Night With The Stars is about creating a space where those with disabilities feel celebrated and included. The volunteers help make that happen by showing up with kindness,” she said.

From start to finish, the night was a reminder of what service really meant. It’s not just about helping the community, it’s about being present, making connections, and creating moments people will never forget.
